The airline industry is currently facing difficult challenges, both environmentally and economically. Globally, air travel has a higher five-year impact on climate change than all cars worldwide combined. Airlines depend on cutthroat commodity dynamics, and almost all legacy airlines have filed for some form of bankruptcy. Electric propulsion offers an opportunity to capitalize on the largest aviation innovation since the jet engine to combat climate change and increase revenue for airlines. At DuXion, we are building a unique electric propulsion system designed specifically for aircraft. We are creating a direct drive ducted fan propulsion system which possesses numerous benefits over existing solutions such as a high power to weight ratio, industry-leading efficiency, reliability, scalability, and adaptability.

DuXion has built its first system and successfully tested it in 2017. The team is now preparing to build a full-scale prototype in partnership with a major aviation company. The detailed design process of this unit has begun and a prototype will be developed in the coming months.

The Role

DuXion is looking for an experienced and passionate individual to join our engineering team as a lead Mechanical Systems Engineer. The person will be responsible for leading analysis, design and development of both rotating and stationary mechanical sub-systems of DuXion’s propulsion technology.


  • Lead, challenge and mentor the mechanical engineering team at DuXion.

  • Carry out the development of the propulsion system configuration by collaborating with DuXion’s teams in aerodynamics, thermal management, powertrain, and electrical systems.

  • Implement a disciplined approach to producing and maintaining documentation of the system's configuration.

  • Serve as a mechanical systems coordination focal between aircraft, propulsion, and powertrain groups.

  • Coordination with manufacturing disciplines including supplier management.

  • Assist in the implementation of CAD systems.

  • Develop a detailed plan and budget starting from current conceptual design through certification including design activities, requirements definition, component & system-level testing, and validation of the entire mechanical system.

  • Lead supplier development and management for development and certification.

  • Maintain a disciplined approach to producing and maintaining documentation of the system's configuration.

  • Lead detailed development of system-level requirements through trade studies and system performance analyses.


  • B.S. in mechanical engineering, M.S. preferred

  • Over 10 years of industrial experience in high speed rotating machine design, with at least 5 years in an engineering lead role

  • Experience in design, manufacturing, and testing of metallic and composite structures

  • Proficiency with FEA tools (e.g. ANSYS, Altair, etc.)

  • Familiar with various engineering standards (NEMA, IEEE, ASME, CSA, etc.)

  • Detailed knowledge of mechanical stress calculations and thermal management

  • Strong management skills including planning and managing work across distributed locations and teams of engineers including third-party engineering teams

  • Fluency with CAD tools (e.g. SolidWorks, CATIA), product data management systems, and drawing release and review methods

  • Fluency with testing methods and data acquisition tools for low-frequency thermal data and/or   vibration data

  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills

The following experiences are also highly valued:

  • Ph.D. with specialization in turbomachinery

  • Experience in aerospace and/or automotive OEM industries

  • Knowledge in the certification of airborne electronics and propulsion systems (FAA, DO-160, EASA, etc.)
